Welcome back! Mixed Media Artist, Mary, has been busy working new creative ideas for unique crafts and gifts for the upcoming holiday season. She is currently working on a new line of decorated boxes with seashells, flowers, and other beautiful decor. Here now...Christmas Handmade Greeting Cards

As mentioned on my last blog entry, Mary has created a new line of Christmas Handmade Greeting Cards—so far with six different designs. These cards are a wonderful way of telling someone they are special, as they are receiving a handmade card, instead of the “one-of-the-mill” type of cards.

The prices are fairly affordable, compared to what you would pay nowadays for a good quality Christmas card, but these ones are “Handmade” by Mary herself, using polymer clay, metal, beads, fibers, and other beautiful materials. Each card is carefully placed in a cellophane envelope, and then wrapped in tissue paper to ensure you receive it in perfect conditions. If you wish to order more than one, we will give you a special price for orders of 6, 12, or 24 cards. Just contact us at, customerservice@mjcrafts-designstudio.com and we will reply with information on the price.

Below are the Christmas handmade cards. The price for each one is $10.00, but remember that if you buy a dozen or more, we’ll work with you. You may purchase these cards either via PayPal, credit cards (calling us or asking us to call you, and giving us the information over the phone), with a money order, or with a check. My son Antonio Jose at the Retired Ceremony, March 1st, 2005. Major Jose A. Gonzalez, proud American!

Well....it had to happen. After 24 years of service in the great United States Air Force, it has come my time to be honorably discharged and join the ranks of the "Retired." My wife (Mary) is unable to continue creating her wonderful handmade crafts and handcrafted gifts during this transition; therefore, MJ Crafts Design Studio has temporarily halted its operations to allow for the packing and transportation of our household goods from South America back to the United States. We expect to be unpacked, settled, and ready to resume operations by late March.

I guess that now, as a retiree, I can finally now go to the Base Exchange and buy me one of those "USAF Retired" baseball caps which I remember seeing veterans wear around the base.

It is a time of mixed feelings...sadness in that I may not again wear a uniform I'm so proud of...but happiness at the prospect of a whole new career and a new chapter in our life.

The world has evolved considerably in those 24 years. Back then, when I started as a Missile Launch Officer, underground in a Launch Control Center in Missouri, the main enemy was the Soviet Union... with its tanks and huge army. Our Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles were pointing at them, and theirs were pointing at us. Nowadays things have changed, as we are fighting an enemy who hides amongst civilians and uses churches and hospitals to shoot from.

Well, I don't want to get on a soapbox and discuss the current state of world affairs. Let's better focus on beautiful and positive things...such as a baby, a friendly smile, a butterfly kiss from a daughter, a nice walk on the beach, funny handmade crafts, etc.

So...remember to look us up again in late March. We will post a message once we are back in business. Once we are back in the states, our shipping and payment options will increase, therefore improving our customer service considerably. Looking forward to continue to serve you. I'm sure Mary will spend a lot of this "down" time making sketches and coming up with more ideas for future collections.

How to be a good neighbor at craft events-interesting article!

In researching the net to improve our MJ Crafts Design Studio crafts and services, I have found some very interesting articles in the internet and wanted to share them with you. This article is titled: Booth Etiquette :How to be a better "neighbor" at crafts events by Wiliam T. Lasley

When attending craft shows, there are some simple things to keep in mind that will make you a better neighbor. Remember that there are others at the event who, like you, are there to make money. To make the best of things you should try to acknowledge the needs and rights of your fellow crafters.

Stay within you allotted space
If your display needs that extra "couple of inches", buy it from the promoters before the event. Often you will need to purchase a "double" booth or at least an additional half space. Check with the show promoter to see what options you have regarding measurements. If you do not want to incur that added expense, you may need to redesign your display so that it will fit in the space you purchase. Whatever you do, do not extend your display into your neighbor's space! The quickest way to make an enemy at a show is to steal space from a fellow exhibitor. And it is stealing. When you put your display into another crafter's booth, you are taking space that someone else has paid for, which is theft, not to mention, rude.

Design your booth in a way that makes it accessible without infringing on your neighbor.

While this relates to the guideline above, it is actually a little different. Sometimes, a display layout may need to be accessible on two sides. In most cases this would require a corner or end spot (yeah, they cost more too, check with the folks in charge of your event). If you are side by side with two other exhibitors, your booth will only be accessible from the front. Don't expect your neighbor to redesign their booth so customers can get to an extra side on yours.
Be friendly to fellow exhibitors, but don't be a pestIt's fine to visit with other exhibitors at a show; in fact I love meeting new crafters! But don't stand around talking if a customer walks in. Remember, craftspeople are there to make money. They can't do that if someone is continually visiting or blocking customers from viewing their wares.

Give yourself enough time to set up before the show begins
Setting up a booth at a craft fair takes time. It takes more time for some than for others. Whether it takes you a few minutes or several hours, be sure you allot enough time to finish before the customers arrive. Boxes blocking aisles keep customers from visiting other booths. Even if you are not in the aisles, setting up a display in your space while the show is open distracts customers. This can hurt sales for yourself and your colleagues.

To sum it up, be aware that there are others attending craft events beside yourself. Be courteous to fellow craftspeople and keep in mind that what may work best for you may infringe upon other exhibitors. Too many negative happenings can make enemies of your fellow craftspeople, or even get you banned from a show. By getting along with others, you can sometimes make important contacts and better yet, friends for life!

All decorated eggs (eggypieces) are created with ceramic and porcelain. All are hand designed, handmade, hand carved and decorated by the artist herself. Painted in satin and pastels colors and enamels, embellished with accents of genuine Swarovski Austrian Crystals. All findings are 18K gold plated. Some of the Eggypieces are mounted on an exclusive stand of English pewter with 18K gold plating. Gold and silver enamel painting finish gives the final touch to each eggypiece. Meet the artist behind MJ Crafts Design Studio

The art pieces designed by Mary M. Gonzalez reflect her expertise and skills developed by working for over 15 years in the areas of art design, graphic design, interior decoration, Special Events, Business Conventions, Trade shows, Theme parties, booth designs, and more. Her interest started as a child, drawing and experimenting with different mediums, and was perfected by studying and obtaining a Bachelors of Art degree in Visual Arts and Design. She has also taken many seminars and attended other courses related to the art and design industry.

During her off-duty time, she was always experimenting with art forms and making pieces of quilting, ceramic lamps, ceramics, porcelain, ceramic custom made orders, painting murals and paintings with different materials and techniques, and making pottery pieces for Special Events, and Theme parties for companies like Johnson & Johnson, American Dentistry, and others. In addition, she owned two stores, "Mary's Flowers & Gift shop", where she sold sell her creations and provided customers with beautiful creations for any floral need. Once she got married and had her son, she further embraced life with the happiness and hope that a child brings to a mother. Her son and husband are now her main motivation and the source of inspiration for her pieces...inspired in the beauty of nature as a symbol of birth, love and life.

Currently assigned at an overseas embassy post with hermilitary husband, she continues to develop this collection line,as well as other designs and creations to satisfy the manycustomers who enjoy her art work.

"I love my life, my son and my husband, with them, theirsupport and love, I will be creating beautiful things as beautifulas life is. For me, is much more than just creating a piece of art,it is to give a part of me in every detail and final work. No matterhow much material it takes, the most important thing is that thepiece reflects what I feel, and at the end it becomes a beautifulpiece of art. I hope you can enjoy my art work, as much as I enjoy creating it. I also want to thank God for giving me the talent to create beautiful things."

All decorated eggs (eggypieces) are created with ceramic and porcelain. All are hand designed, handmade, hand carved and decorated by the artist herself. Painted in satin and pastels colors and enamels, embellished with accents of genuine Swarovski Austrian Crystals. All findings are 18K gold plated. The exhition of the Eggypiece Art Collection (porcelain and ceramic decorated eggs) at the U.S. Embassy, Montevideo from 28 June- 9 July was a resounding success. The "Soaring Eagle" Eggypiece was the center of attention at this exhbition in commemoration of the the Independence Day celebration at this overseas post.

Besides the Eggypiece exhibition, Mary was invited to sell her handmade crafts to the embassy's employees for a couple of hours at the Community Liaison Office Lounge Area.

MJ Crafts Design Studio opened its "Tribute to America-Independence Day" celebration exhbition last 28 June at the U.S. Embassy, Montevideo. The exhibition will be open from 28 June until 9 July 2004. The "star" of the exhibition is the Eggypiece specially created for the occasion named "Soaring Eagle."

In case you are wondering what are these eggypieces I keep hearing about, let me explain. The word Eggypiece is a trademark creation of MJ Crafts Design Studio.

All eggypieces are created with ceramic and porcelain. All are hand designed, handmade, hand carved and decorated by the artist herself. MJ Crafts Design Studio Customer Service Philosophy

Hi! My name is Jose, husband of the artist Mary and webmaster of MJ Crafts Design Studio. You may have seen my photo in the “About Us” section, and possibly read my bio. I ask for your indulgence and a few minutes of your time so that I can explain to you our philosophy on “customer-service."

First and foremost, let me explain that my wife, Mary, is a consummated businesswoman who has owned and managed two flower shops at U.S. military installations. Her loyal customers where always disappointed when they found out she was closing shop because the military was moving us again. Now, you may ask…why didn’t you keep the shop open and have an employee manage it? Well…we tried that the first time around for about a year; however, the customer base dropped to a point in which it was no longer economically feasible to maintain the store.

Her customers would be writing and calling her every week telling her how much they missed her, and her “special touch”. Furthermore, the customers missed her customer-oriented attitude. Mary would work with the customer to customize floral arrangements, gifts, or personalized creations to match and satisfy the customer’s needs. No cookie-cutter approach! Every gift purchased from her store was intended for a specific purpose. Of course, I’m not saying that it was like this for every single person that walked into her store…I’m talking about her loyal, repeated customers, which were many. One person who was very disappointed to see Mary leave her last flower shop was the Army Post Commander’s wife…this was at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. This lady was a loyal customer of Mary’s creations and told her how much she would miss her creations. The Post Commander, awarded Mary with a beautiful letter of recommendation and an “Excellence Service” award. Now, lets talk about me, as the other half of this team.

I have been browsing the net considerably during these past months…mainly to learn how to maintain a website, as I'm not a professional webmaster. I’ve noticed that many sites post multiple logos from third-party companies as a testimony to their potential customer that their company is a reliable business and that they will fulfil their end of the bargain.Well...I have to tell you, that for now you will not see one of those logos in this site. Why?…for starters, I don’t feel the need to pay hundreds of dollars to some company so they can testify that I am an honest businessman. I believe a person’s word is his/her bond and that should suffice. I was raised in my family with that principle, and it was further ingrained in my personality by my almost 24-year career as an officer in the United States Air Force.The Internet may be huge, but the handmade crafts section is a manageable, small enough sector where customers will probably find out if a business is legitimate and willing to provide adequate customer service.

Now, I’m a flexible person and will continue to learn more about the website business…and who knows, I may change my mind if convinced otherwise…but for now, you have our words that if you are not satisfied with your MJ Crafts Design Studio creation, we will work with you, or return your money if that is the what it takes to maintain you as a customer, and you have OUR WORD on it!
